How We Built ANDA DOLLS — One Website, Too Many Ideas and a Lot of “No, Not Like That”

Building a website for collectible art dolls sounds simple until you realise that the dolls are not toys, the website is not a shop, the artist is not a factory, and apparently even one little button can start a serious discussion.

This is the story of how we built ANDA DOLLS — and why creating a website for art turned out to be almost as creative as creating the art itself.

How We Built ANDA DOLLS — One Website, Too Many Ideas and a Lot of “No, Not Like That”

When I decided to create a website for my art dolls, I thought the difficult part would be the dolls themselves.

I was wrong. The dolls were actually the easy part.

The real adventure began when we started building andadolls.com.

At first, the idea sounded perfectly reasonable: create a beautiful website where collectors could see my art dolls, read their stories and contact me if they wanted to acquire one.

Simple, right? Not quite.

Very quickly, we discovered that ANDA DOLLS was not supposed to be an ordinary online shop.

And that decision changed almost everything.

These are not toys

One of the first things that became very clear was that the language had to be right.

My dolls are collectible art dolls. They are original works of art, created by hand, and intended for collectors.

Not children. Not toys. Not mass-produced products.

This may sound like a small distinction, but it affects everything: the photography, the descriptions, the tone, the navigation, the way the pieces are presented and even the words used in search engines.

So we spent quite a lot of time making sure the website sounded like a place for collectors rather than a toy store. And yes, there were moments when I had to say some version of:

“No. My dolls are not toys.” More than once.

Then we decided it wasn't really a shop

The next surprise was the shopping system.

At one point, it would have been perfectly logical to add the usual online-shop features: payment buttons, cards, PayPal, Stripe and all the other things modern websites seem to expect.

But the more we thought about it, the less it made sense for my work.

A collector acquiring a unique art doll is not buying a pair of socks.

These are individual artworks. Some are completely unique, and the relationship between the artist and the collector matters.

So instead of pushing a visitor directly toward checkout, we created a Collector Inquiry approach.

You see the artwork. You read its story. You decide whether it speaks to you.

And then you contact the artist. That felt much more appropriate for ANDA DOLLS.

Of course, this meant that we then had to build all the things that a normal online shop normally doesn't need.

Collector inquiries. Statuses. Invoices. Payment tracking. Notifications. Artwork history. Provenance.

Exhibition information. And, because apparently we had not given ourselves enough work already, a collector passport and timeline.

At that point I began to suspect that we were no longer building a website.

We were building a small digital museum.

And then came the admin panel

There was another requirement that seemed innocent at first:

The admin panel should be in Latvian, with the option to switch to English.

Why? Because I am the person who has to use it. It should be understandable to me, not just to a developer.

That sounds completely logical.

Until you start creating dozens of buttons, statuses, fields and instructions in two languages.

Then suddenly one innocent word becomes a discussion.

What should this button say? What is the best English term? Is this a “collection”, a “series” or something else? Is this a “story”, a “description” or an “artist statement”?

And then comes the inevitable moment:

“No. That is not what I mean.”

This sentence has probably contributed more to the development of ANDA DOLLS than any technical specification.

The website had to understand the dolls — and Google had to understand them too

There was another layer to the whole project: SEO. I didn't want descriptions stuffed with keywords.

I wanted the website to speak naturally about what the work actually is while making it clear to Google — and increasingly to AI systems — that these are collectible art dolls by Anda Bieza.

The AI visibility audit later confirmed something interesting: AI systems already connect ANDA DOLLS with me as the artist, but the domain itself is still much younger than BIEZAART. AI_Audits_AndaDolls_BiezaArt(1)

That means the website cannot simply be beautiful. It has to be understandable.

Every artwork needs a proper name. Its story matters. Materials matter. The artist matters. The fact that the work is handmade and collectible matters.

In other words, we were trying to make the website speak two languages at once: the language of collectors and the language of search engines.

And the two do not always naturally agree.

The endless battle over titles

Then there were the titles. I became increasingly convinced that every artwork needed a very precise naming structure. Not because I enjoy making life difficult. Although I am sure there were moments when it looked exactly like that. The title needs to work for the collector, for the artist's archive, for Google and for the overall ANDA DOLLS brand. So a title cannot simply sound poetic.

It has a job to do. And once we found a structure that worked, I wanted it used consistently.

Every time. No improvising. Because if you are building an international art brand, consistency matters.

The part I actually love

Despite all the corrections, discussions and occasional digital frustration, there was something wonderful about the process.

We were not simply putting my dolls onto a webpage. We were asking a much bigger question:

How should an artist present a body of collectible work to the world?

How do you make a visitor understand that every doll is an artwork?

How do you tell the story without overwhelming the collector?

How do you show the craftsmanship without turning the page into a technical catalogue?

How do you create desire without sounding like a sales pitch?

And how do you make a small handmade artwork feel as important online as it feels when you hold it in your hands?

Those questions shaped ANDA DOLLS much more than any template could have done.

From dolls to a digital collection

Today I look at ANDA DOLLS differently from when we started. It is not simply a website where my dolls are displayed.

It has become part of the archive of my work. The collections, individual characters, stories, materials, provenance and exhibition history all create a record of the artworks I have made.

And that is important to me. Because an artist's website should not only answer the question:

“What is available?”

It should also answer:

“Who created this? Why does it exist? What is the story behind it? And why does it matter?”

That is what we were really building.

Not just a website. A home for the work. A place where a collector can enter my world and understand that these little figures are not toys sitting on a shelf. They are pieces of my imagination, made by hand and given their own lives. And yes, we probably spent far too much time discussing buttons. But that's the strange thing about creating an art website. Sometimes the smallest detail tells you exactly what the whole brand is supposed to be. And if I have learned anything from building ANDA DOLLS, it is this:

Creating art may start with imagination. Building an art brand requires an alarming amount of editing.

And sometimes the most important creative direction is simply: “No. Not like that. Let's do it again.”

Africa, Denis and the Beginning of a Different Life

There are moments in life when you suddenly realise that you cannot continue living the way you have been living. You reach a point where something inside you breaks, and you are left with a choice: either you sink deeper into loneliness and despair, or you do something to save yourself.

For me, that turning point was connected with Africa and with Denis.

Africa was not simply a place I visited. It became part of a period in my life when I was forced to look at myself and at my life differently. And Denis was part of that story too. There are people and experiences that enter our lives at exactly the moment when we need them, even though we may understand their meaning only much later.

I was going through a very difficult time. I felt deeply alone, and there was a real danger that I would simply disappear into that loneliness and despair. I knew that I had to find something that would give me a reason to get up in the morning, something that could hold me when everything else felt uncertain.

That is when painting began to change everything.

I had painted before, but now painting became something much deeper. It began to sing to my soul.

I found myself in colours. In emotions. In the freedom to put onto canvas something that I could not always express in words. The studio became a place where I felt safe. I could close the door on the outside world and enter a space where I did not have to be strong, explain myself or pretend that everything was fine.

I could simply feel.

And perhaps most importantly, I discovered that I could give love without expecting anything in return.

I could pour it into colour, into a face, into a flower, into a gesture, into an entire painting. The canvas did not ask me for anything. It did not judge me. It simply accepted whatever I brought to it.

That was incredibly healing.

Looking back now, I don't think I started painting because I had decided to become an artist. I started because I needed to survive a part of my life. Painting became a way to breathe again.

What began as something deeply personal slowly became my artistic language.

Today, when I stand in front of a blank canvas, I still recognise that feeling. I may begin with an idea, a colour or an image, but somewhere underneath it there is always emotion. My paintings are created from that place where memory, imagination and feeling meet.

This is also why I don't want my art to be only beautiful.

I want it to feel something.

I want a painting to be able to reach a person without explaining itself. Perhaps it reminds them of someone they loved. Perhaps it awakens a forgotten memory. Perhaps it simply gives them a feeling they needed at that particular moment.

For me, that is the real power of original art.

My journey as a Latvian artist did not begin with a career plan. It began with a personal need to find my way back to myself. And the more I painted, the more I understood that this was not something temporary. Painting had become part of who I was.

Africa and Denis belong to the story of how that transformation began. They are part of a chapter that I cannot separate from the woman and artist I became afterwards.

Sometimes we don't choose the moment that changes our life.

We only choose what we do with it.

For me, I chose to paint.

And somewhere between the colours, emotions and silence of the studio, I began to find myself again.

Painting didn't just become my art. It became a place where my soul could breathe.

There are moments in life when something that once seemed like a side road quietly becomes the road itself.

For me, that road was art.

Before I became a professional artist, my life was deeply connected with business. I built a successful career, worked for many years, and learned how to make decisions, take responsibility and stand on my own feet.

Then painting became more than something I simply did.

It became a way of seeing.

When painting became part of my life

I have never wanted to fit everything I create into one strict artistic style.

My paintings can be expressive, figurative, floral, intuitive or completely unexpected. What connects them is not a particular formula, but the feeling behind them — colour, emotion, symbolism and a story.

Every original painting begins with something.

Sometimes it is an image.

Sometimes a feeling.

Sometimes simply a thought that refuses to disappear.

That is one of the reasons I continue to paint. I am not interested in repeating myself just because something worked before. I want each artwork to become its own world.

From business to art

Leaving one professional identity and building another is not a small change.

Business taught me independence and discipline. Art taught me something different: to trust intuition, to accept uncertainty and to allow an idea to develop without knowing exactly where it will lead.

Today, these two parts of my life are not opposites.

They are both part of me.

The businesswoman taught me to build.

The artist taught me to listen.

And somewhere between those two worlds, Anda Bieza as an artist began to take shape.

More than decoration

I have never seen an original artwork simply as something that fills an empty wall.

A painting can carry a memory. It can create a feeling that is difficult to explain.

It can remind someone of a person, a place, a period of life — or something they have not yet experienced.

That is why storytelling has become such an important part of my work.

Today, my paintings and one-of-a-kind art dolls are created as original works, each with its own identity and story. My artworks have entered private collections in more than 20 countries, and my work has been presented through exhibitions and international art initiatives.

But numbers are not what made me an artist. The decision to keep creating did.

What changed

Looking back, I think the most important change was not simply that I started painting.

It was that I allowed myself to take my art seriously.

To treat an idea as worth following. To finish a work even when I was not completely sure where it was going. To show it to other people.

And eventually, to let my art become part of my professional identity.

That changed much more than my work.

It changed the way I look at myself.

The artist I am becoming

I don't believe an artist ever reaches a final version of herself.

There is always another painting.

Another idea. Another material. Another story waiting somewhere in life.

That is perhaps what I love most about being an artist.

I can continue changing. And the work can change with me. This is only one part of my story.

There are other stories behind the person I became, including experiences that changed the direction of my life in ways I could not have predicted at the time.

Those stories belong to the next chapters.

For now, this is the part I can say with certainty:

Art did not simply become something I do. It became part of who I am.

A personal story about building BIEZAART and Anda Dolls, creating original art, and sharing the journey of bringing handmade artworks to collectors around the world.

Every artwork begins with an idea.

Sometimes it arrives quietly. Sometimes it appears in the middle of the night when I should probably be sleeping. And sometimes it simply refuses to leave my mind until I bring it to life.

That is how BIEZAART has grown over the years.

What started as a passion for creating original paintings has gradually become something much bigger—a world filled with color, imagination and stories. Today, that world also includes Anda Dolls, my collection of one-of-a-kind collectible art dolls, each handcrafted as a unique work of art.

People often ask me if I have a grand business plan.

The honest answer?

Not really.

My plan has always been quite simple. Create original art that makes people smile.

If one of my paintings brightens someone's home, or one of my dolls becomes part of a cherished collection, then I've achieved something meaningful.

Of course, there is another member of the team these days.

Artificial Intelligence.

Yes... I have a rather unusual creative partner. While I paint, sculpt and sometimes make an impressive mess in my studio, AI quietly helps me organize ideas, improve my website, write better texts, refine SEO and prepare my work for collectors and galleries around the world.

We make a surprisingly good team.

I create the art.

AI occasionally reminds me that maybe I don't need another midnight redesign of my website.

(Although it rarely succeeds.)

Together, we are building something much bigger than an online gallery.

We are building a place where people from anywhere in the world can discover original paintings, collectible art dolls, and handcrafted artworks created with imagination, craftsmanship and heart.

Some of my artworks have already found homes in more than 20 countries.

Every time I carefully pack a painting or a doll for its journey to a new collector, I wonder where it will live, what conversations it might inspire, and what memories it may become part of.

That thought never gets old.

This Journal is where I'll occasionally share those stories.
